The Benefits of Aging

Aging is a natural process that happens to everyone.

Aging is a highly individualized experience. How we look, feel, and function can vastly differ between people of the same age. Chronological age is based on time, and aging has many negative assumptions.

Scientists identify aging as something we acquire, not something we are born with. According to the National Institute of Aging, we journey through a natural process of decline that is characterized by physical, mental, and emotional changes.

Aging is a natural process of life. How we age depends on many factors, such as genetics, lifestyle, nutritional health, and several unknown factors that can contribute to diseases such as Alzheimer’s.

However, rather than focus on the ever-popular discussion of age describing the gradual decline of mind and body, I think I’d rather discuss the benefits of aging.

So often, we focus on the negative side of aging. Gray hair, a few wrinkles, and not being as physically agile as we once doesn’t have to be all negative. There are benefits that we don’t often think about;

The Benefits of Aging

  3. Our senses become more acute and we appreciate life more
  4. We learn to forgive and let go of grudges
  5. We develop a deeper sense of spirituality
  6. Aging can be a time of growth and self-discovery
  7. We come to realize that our time on earth is finite and we should make the most of it

What to do About Aging

  1. What to expect as you age -staying in front of the aging process is your best bet.
  2. How to take care of your body as you get older – one thing is to listen to your body. Your body knows what you need, and you need to get better at listening to it.
  3. Changes in your skin and hair as you age – you can’t avoid it, but you can delay it
  4. Importance of staying active and eating healthy as you age – regular exercise and eating healthier can improve sleep, lower the risk for chronic disease, and help you stay ahead of the aging process.
  5. Tips for dealing with common issues that come with aging, such as memory loss, arthritis, and diabetes – if you are concerned about diseases associated with age, do some research. Don’t wait for it to happen.
  6. Get support from friends and family members as you age – it’s nice to commiserate about the aging process; you won’t feel alone in the process.

If you want to focus on the future, plenty of resources are available. Much like your car, if you do not take the time to maintain it, it eventually wears down from neglect, becomes diseased, and will not move anymore. You have one body and want to keep it healthy, moving, and functioning. And focus on the positives that come with age.
